FWAPC Member’s Luncheon with
Lt/Gen Michael C. Gould
Superintendent, U.S. Air Force Academy
March 9, 2010

As the first of many future luncheon events for FWAPC members, our guest of honor was Lt/Gen Michael C. Gould, Superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.

There was an excellent turn out of our membership to hear general Gould’s most interesting story of the goals, successes and plans of the Academy. Many of our members have visited the Academy, and could fully appreciate the general’s pride in the caliber of officers that have been privileged to attend that institution.

The general was portrayed by the Star-Telegram as trying to “ light a fire” in its (Academy) cadets that piloting unmanned drones is as important to the military, though unquestionably not as glorifying as fixed-wing aircraft. This, the general stated, was an admittedly “tough sell” to the cadets at first. In addition he has increased the teaching of foreign languages, multiculturalism and current world events to the cadets. The clear purpose is to better prepare future officers for the types of complex wars and nation-building as in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The general spoke completely without notes, and kept the audience entertained with many side stories of his experiences, and of some with former graduates in the room. Please tell us how tall you are, Chad Hennings. The generals description of you as 7’ 5” does seem a bit over the top.

This is the first of several planned future luncheons with military guest speakers, as well as others, which are designed to better inform our members of current military activities as well as giving all of us more input and opportunities to improve our organization’s overall objectives.

Our thanks to the DFW Marriott Hotel and Golf Club, and to fellow FWAPC member, Jim Campbell, General Manager, for the excellent food and service.
