301st BBQ

On October 13th, thanks to Jim Thomason’s personal fund raising, the Foundation paid for a major event for the families of the 301st Fighter Wing at NAS/JRB.

It was a total success, and thanks to the weatherman, the rain held off until all of the events were completed. “Bat”, Jim’s friend provided a unique “pop-open” van that became a 14 seat bar and entertainment stage. The platform and sound system were perfect for Col. Scobee’s induction of new and re-enlisting volunteers into the U.S. Air Force Reserve. M/Gen Frank Padilla was on hand to welcome all, and both officers paid a special tribute to the Fort Worth Airpower Council and Foundation for their generous support, and for “being there” for the troops and their families when needed.

Jim arranged for 3,500 pounds of brisket, and personally oversaw the three days of the cooking it took to prepare for the event. Attendance was more than we could have hoped for, and with the 10th A.F. BBQ going on right next to the 301st, the scene was a nothing but pure enjoyment on the part of the families. Softball games, children’s games and “bounce houses” kept everyone busy, but when they heard General Padilla holler, “Let’s Eat”, the lines formed quickly, and moved rapidly. It’s safe to say that no one left hungry.

There was enough food left to serve many other troops who were on duty that weekend, including the gate guards. Word has it that many troops attending drill weekend the next day had brisket for lunch…on us!

One of the proudest moments came when the visiting Command Sergeant Major of the 10th AF, who has responsibility for over 50,000 enlisted troops, told John Kinnear and other FWAPC members attending, that he has been to dozens of bases over the years and has never seen the level of civilian support that is present at NAS/JRB: The Fort Worth Airpower men and women who give so generously of their time and money to aid in the welfare of families of our area troops.

Goes without saying, but at least one general officer is hoping that the FWAPC will make this an annual event. “How ‘bout them Council members?”
